Flame Retardant Curtains

Custom Flame Retardant Curtains

Why Off-the-Shelf Flame Retardant Curtains Fall Short?

Passing fire code is only half the battle. The other half is finding personal-use or commercial flame retardant curtains — panels built from fabric that resists catching fire and slows flame from spreading — that actually fit your windows and don’t look like they belong in a supply closet.

Most off-the-shelf FR curtains come in a handful of fixed sizes and a short list of plain, institutional fabrics, so you’re left with light-leaking gaps at the edges and a room that reads like a waiting area. We solve both.

ZIPCushions’ flame-retardant curtains are custom-made to meet the NFPA 701 flame-propagation standard and cut to your exact window, in the fabric, color, and header you choose — so you get code-ready fire safety and a curtain that looks like it belongs, whether it’s hanging in a hotel lobby, a classroom, or your own media room.

Why Choose Flame Retardant Curtains?

Made to Measure, Not “Close Enough”

Made to measure is the whole point here. Instead of forcing your window to match a stock drop, we cut and sew every flame-retardant curtain to your exact measurements — in the header, fabric, and color you choose — so it meets NFPA 701 and still hangs clean, with no gaps at the edges and none of the compromise a stock panel forces on you. Not sure how to measure, or which fabric suits your setting? Our custom curtain experts will walk you through it.

How to Choose the Right Flame Retardant Curtains?

Flame retardant vs. fire resistant curtains — same thing?

In everyday use, yes — “flame retardant,” “fire retardant,” and “fire resistant” all describe fabric that resists ignition and slows flame spread. None of them mean “fireproof”; no curtain is. What actually matters is the standard the fabric meets, which for drapery is NFPA 701.

Inherently flame retardant (IFR) vs. treated (FR)

There are two ways a curtain earns its rating. Inherently flame-retardant fabric is built fire-resistant at the fiber level, so it holds its rating for the life of the panel. Treated fabric gets a flame-retardant finish applied after weaving, which works well but can wear down with repeated harsh washing. Both can meet NFPA 701 — tell us your setting and we’ll point you to the right one.

Where FR curtains are required?

Fire codes commonly call for flame-retardant drapery in hotels, dorms, hospitals, care homes, schools, theaters, and other places where people gather. If you’re specifying for a commercial building, your local code or fire marshal will usually name NFPA 701. For a home theater or a high-rise apartment, they’re a smart precaution even when they aren’t required.

Adding room-darkening or warmth

Fire safety and light control aren’t a trade-off. We make flame-retardant blackout curtains that darken a room and meet NFPA 701 at the same time, plus lined options that add a little insulation. Pick the performance you need; the fire rating comes with it.
