Also known as the “Rub Test”, the Martindale rating measures a fabric’s abrasion resistance — the number of rubs it withstands before showing wear. The higher the number, the heavier the everyday use a fabric can handle, which makes it a quick, reliable way to judge whether a fabric suits a decorative pillow, a family sofa cushion, or a high-traffic seat.

For most home cushions we recommend fabrics rated 15,000 and above, and 25,000+ for seating used every day. Many of our performance collections — including Sunbrella®, Agora®, and our polyester velvets — are rated well beyond this, with several exceeding 50,000 rubs, so they hold up to years of indoor and outdoor use.
