Outdoor bench cushions are made-to-measure seat cushions built for benches that live outside — patio benches, deck benches, garden benches, porch swings and picnic-table benches. At ZIPCushions, yours is cut to your exact measurements, filled with dry fast foam that lets rain drain straight through, and covered in a fade-resistant performance fabric. It stays out through the season and still looks like the day it arrived.

  • Patio and deck benches — the bench that seats everyone when the chairs run out.
  • Garden and park-style benches — including slatted seats, which need a firmer cushion to sit level.
  • Porch swings and gliders — cut to the swing seat, with ties so it stays put in the wind.
  • Picnic table benches — long, narrow, and rarely a standard size.
  • Poolside and outdoor kitchen benches — where a cushion gets sat on wet, over and over.
  • Built-in stone, concrete, and brick seating — a cushion is what makes a hard ledge somewhere people actually sit.

Dry-fast foam, because outdoor cushions get rained on

The difference between an outdoor cushion and an indoor one is what happens the morning after a storm. Dry-fast foam is an open-cell foam that lets water pass straight through and out instead of holding it in the middle, so the cushion drains and dries in hours rather than staying soggy for days. That is also what keeps mildew from getting a foothold. High-density foam is still the better choice for a covered porch or a screened bench that never actually gets wet.

Fade-resistant fabric, because the sun is the real enemy

Weather does not usually kill an outdoor cushion. Sunlight does, quietly, over two summers, until the navy has gone chalky and the whole set looks tired. Sunbrella® and Agora® are solution-dyed performance weaves, which means the color goes into the fiber rather than onto it, so it holds instead of washing out. They are also water-repellent and easy to rinse down. It is the reason an outdoor cushion is worth buying once properly rather than twice cheaply.

Cut to your bench, down to the quarter inch

Outdoor benches are rarely a standard size, and a slatted garden bench is almost never the size the label says. Yours is cut to the measurements you send, in the shape your bench actually is, with ties added where you need them so the cushion does not travel every time the wind picks up.

    • Any length, width and thickness — rectangles, squares, angled ends and shaped fronts
    • Foam options: dry fast foam for exposed benches, high-density foam for covered ones
    • Fade-resistant Sunbrella®, Agora® and olefin performance weaves
    • Removable, zippered covers with heavy-duty YKK® zippers
    • Optional piping, ties and drainage grommets
    • Matching outdoor bolsters and throw pillows
    • Sunbrella® Horizon™ marine-grade vinyl available as a custom option for dock and boat seating
    • Backed by our perfect-fit warranty

Outdoor bench cushions are covered in solution-dyed performance weaves — Sunbrella®, Agora® and olefin — where the color is locked into the fiber before it is ever woven. That is the whole reason they hold their color through summer after summer instead of going chalky by the second one. They are water-repellent, which is what you want on a cushion rather than a sealed fabric: rain beads and runs off, but the weave still breathes, so the foam underneath can dry out instead of staying damp. They rinse down with a hose, release most spills before they set, and resist the mildew that ruins cushions left out through a humid week. For dock, boat and poolside seating that takes constant splash, Sunbrella® Horizon™ marine-grade vinyl is available as a custom option and wipes clean completely. Every cover is removable on a heavy-duty zipper, so end-of-season cleaning is a straightforward job rather than a reason to buy new cushions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! Our custom outdoor bench cushions are specifically designed to decks and patios. You can choose fade-resistant fabrics like Sunbrella®, which won’t lose color in the sun, and pair them with quick-dry Dry-Fast foam for rain resilience. These materials are also mold- and mildew-resistant, making them ideal for patios, decks, porches, and garden benches that stay outside year-round.

With dry fast foam, the water passes through the open cells and drains out the bottom, and the cushion is usually dry to sit on within a few hours of the sun coming back. The performance fabric cover sheds most of the rain before it ever reaches the foam. Stand the cushion on its edge after a heavy storm if you want it dry faster — that opens both faces to the air and cuts the drying time roughly in half.

A solution-dyed weave, meaning Sunbrella® or Agora®. Solution-dyed means the pigment goes into the fiber while it is being made, so there is no surface dye to bleach out. Printed and piece-dyed outdoor fabrics look identical in year one and noticeably tired by year three on a south-facing bench. If your bench never leaves full sun, this is the one upgrade worth making.

The two things that cause it are foam that holds water and a cover that cannot breathe. Dry fast foam drains instead of holding, and performance weaves are mildew-resistant and breathable, so the combination gives mildew very little to work with. What still helps: do not stack damp cushions flat on top of each other, and give them a rinse and a proper dry before storing them for the winter.

Ties are the simplest answer — we add them at the back corners so the cushion fastens to the bench slats or the frame, and they hold well on everything short of a real gale. For slatted and open-frame benches, ties matter more than they do indoors because there is nothing gripping the underside of the cushion. Tell us where your bench's rails or spindles sit and we will place the ties to reach them.

You can leave them out through the season they were made for, but through a full winter they will last considerably longer if you bring them in or cover them. Off-season storage is not about a single storm; it is about months of freeze, thaw and damp with no sun to dry things out between. Clean them, dry them completely, and store them somewhere ventilated rather than sealed in plastic, which traps the moisture you just spent a day getting rid of.

Three to four inches is the usual answer for a patio or garden bench, and it is thicker than most people expect. An outdoor bench is often deeper and more upright than an indoor one, and a thin cushion on a slatted seat lets the slats telegraph through within a few minutes of sitting down. On a picnic-table bench, where the table height is fixed, two to three inches keeps the seat at a workable height.

Yes! We can create coordinating custom seat cushions, back cushions, and throw pillows in the same fabric as your bench pad. If you want a cohesive look throughout your patio, entryway, or breakfast nook, just let us know - we’ll match the color, fabric, piping, and size to your order.

It’s easy! Measure the length and depth of the bench’s seating surface and decide on your preferred thickness (2-4" for most uses, 5-6" for plush comfort). For angled or curved benches, we recommend creating a paper template or uploading a sketch. Our team is happy to review measurements with you to ensure your bench cushion fits perfectly the first time.

    Extremely happy with this purchase

I ordered outdoor chair cushions and couch cushion to replace my existing outdoor furniture. I was nervous as this was all done over email and was not sure that they would come out as well as they did. I highly recommend this company. I am very happy with my cushions and they look great. It did take a little longer than their time indicated on their website, but it was worth the wait
